At the January 6, 2025 regular meeting of the South-Western City School District (SWCSD) Board of Education, the Board approved the new school calendar for the 2025-2026 school year.
In the drafting process of the calendars, the district solicited feedback from all three employee union groups as well as the South-Western City Schools Council of PTA's for input. The creation of the calendar
In accordance with board policy, the Board also solicited feedback from the community by holding a public review period "at least 30 days prior to adopting a school calendar, the Board shall hold a public hearing on the school calendar, addressing topics that include, but are not limited to, the total number of hours in a school year, length of day, and beginning and end dates of instruction" (po8210). SWCSD would like to thank our parents and community members for their feedback in November and December 2024.
The 2025-2026 Academic Calendar is characterized by:
- Teachers will start their year on Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19 as professional work days
- Students in grades 4-12 will start on Wednesday, August 20 (Students in grades K-3 will have a staggered start by last name from August 20-August 21 as students get acclimated to their new teachers in small, personable groups).
- Preschool students will start on Monday, August 25
- Thanksgiving Break will run from Wednesday, November 26-Friday, November 28
- Winter Break will run from Monday, December 22 - Friday, January 2 (two full weeks)
- Spring Break will run from March 30- April 3
- June 1 will be the last day of school
Why do certain days fall on the calendar as they do and how many days go into a calendar?
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) prescribes
certain requirements for School Districts, Joint Vocational School Districts, and Chartered Nonpublic Schools. School districts, joint vocational school districts, and chartered nonpublic schools will be required to be open for instruction for a minimum of:
- 455 hours for students in half-day kindergarten;
- 910 hours for students in full-day kindergarten through Grade 6;
- 1,001 hours for students in Grades 7-12; and
- 910 hours for students enrolled in traditional school district online schools.
